Day 1 hike to Stover Creek Shelter

At 5 P.M. on May 14, 2021, we embarked on our ambitious journey to complete the Appalachian Trail. We hiked up Springer Mountain to the start of the trail. Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. It was a huge uphill, and we had to walk with our backpacks that weighed a ton. Once we got to the top the view was amazing. (If you see it in person it looks even better, than the pic below)

After that, we decided to check out the Springer Mt. shelter. It looked a little cozy, and we were tempted. But we decided to push a little, and walk a couple miles to Stover Creek Shelter. On the way to the shelter we saw a whole forest floor of ferns, it was amazing. The lush green was very pleasing and calming to our eyes. (pic below)

The hike was long and tiring. Even though it only took one and a half hours, it felt like forever. Once we arrived I was exhausted and relieved. At Stover Creek Shelter, we pitched the tent and had dinner. My dad accidentally forgot the PBJ sandwiches and brought plain bread instead 🤣🤣🤣. So for dinner we ate plain bread instead. After dinner we went to go fill water from Stover Creek. The water was nice and fresh. We then came back to camp and got in bed at around 8. My dad and I shared the sleeping bag as a blanket. It wasn’t so comfy, but it was all we had. That was the first day I hiked on the Appalachian Trail.

In order to fill water from a stream, follow the steps below.

  1. Put a filter on top of the bottle.
  2. Dip the bottle in the creek and fill to the top. It will probably take a while.
  3. Take an UltraViolet light and put it in the bottle for the required amount of time (depends on how much water you filled).
  4. You now have fresh clean mountain water to drink.
