My dad and I got up at 7 AM, packed up the tent, brushed our teeth, and then left the shelter at 7:30. The start of the day was a small climb to the top of Blue Mountain. Then it was down to Unicoi Gap. The down to the gap took a while, and it was really foggy. At about 9 AM we reached Unicoi Gap. We then started up Rocky Mountain. On the way up Rocky Mtn., there was a great flowing stream where we filled water, and made more gatorade. The climb up Rocky Mtn. was pretty tiring. The top of the mountain was the only actual rocky part. We then started hiking down to Indian Grave Gap. On the way down to the gap we saw a huge rattlesnake! It was laying in the middle of the trail, so we had to walk off the trail and around it. It was really scary. At the gap we took a 10 minute break and ate some trail mix. We only had 2.6 miles to the top of Tray Mountain, and where we would eat lunch. On the way up, we met a kind, old gentleman who was also climbing to the top of Tray Mtn. He was looking for these beautiful pink flowers that only blossomed around Memorial Day. We were really lucky to see them ourselves. (pic below)
The view at the top of Tray Mtn. was also amazing. (pic below)
At the shelter we ate tuna, beef jerky, and pasta. The pasta tasted horrible! After cleaning and filling, we left. We had only one more big down to Steeltrap Gap, and then small ups and downs to Addis Gap, which is where we were planning on staying. If we still had enough energy, we would climb the mountain to get to Deep Gap Shelter. At Addis Gap we were way too tired to climb up and down the mountain to Deep Gap. So we decided to set up camp in Addis Gap, and tackle the big climb the next day.
