Day 9 hike to Carter Gap Shelter

At 7 AM, on July 1, 2021, my dad and I left our house and started driving to Fontana Dam. On the way to Fontana Dam we ate an Egg and Cheese sandwich for breakfast. It was really good. Once we arrived at Fontana it was 10:45 AM, and at 11 we got a ride back to Deep Gap Parking. At 1 PM we restarted our hike on the Appalachian Trail. (pic below)

Since it was going to rain the whole night. The plan was to get to Carter Gap Shelter, and sleep in the shelter. If the shelter was not available, we would then walk an extra 2 miles to a different camping spot. The hike to the shelter wasn’t too bad. It was mostly gradual, and there were a couple big ups and downs along the way. At Deep Gap Parking, there was a sign that read “More Difficult”, but so far it wasn’t more difficult at all. Once we got to Carter Gap Shelter, it was 5:30 PM. Lucky for us, there was only one other person in the shelter, that meant we would be able to sleep there. People said that Carter Gap Shelter was an active bear site and that we should hang our food. But we didn’t have any rope, so we had to hope that no bear would come.
